The Lensbaby Velvet 56 is inspired by “classic portrait lenses from the mid-20th century”, a subject I know all too well. My favorite lens, the piece that is usually attached to my Nikon’s lens mount, is a Nikkor 55mm f1.2 from the mid 1960s. It was a gift from my father when I purchased my first Nikon camera, and it’s been a prized part of my collection ever since. It’s a completely manual lens, both the focus and aperture are selected manually on a pair of dials around the body....

The new Lytro Illum Light Field Camera uses what Lytro calls a “megaray” sensor which captures image data beyond the simple, thin focus field of a traditional camera. The first Lytro camera featured 11 megarays, while the new Lytro Illum features 40 megarays, providing a deeper, more accurate capture of the full field of vision beyond the lens. While the final image is just 4.0 MP in total resolution, the value is pretty clear– images shot for the aren’t going to need higher final resolutions, and the point here is the creative control of focus to explore within those “megarays”....

Portugal’s Spaceworkers Architects recently completed the refurbishment of an old townhouse in Oporto, Portugal’s second city not far from the Atlantic coast. Much like the famed Port wine which comes from this region, Spaceworks has produced a fine, classic home with influence from the region’s long history. The interior of the home is at once contemporary and classical, including traditional influences and modern furnishings. Custom cabinetry has been built into the walls of the master bedroom, the office and the kitchen, providing plenty of room for embellishment by the client with knick knacks, books and otherwise....

Another week, another brilliant clock by Art Lebedev. The Reflectius Clock by Lebedev follows up another recent clock concept by this design crew, the Segmentus Clock that we published earlier this month. While the last clock used a mixture of mechanical arms and frosted glass, this clock uses lasers and mirrors to tell the time. A single laser tells the time in this clock, bouncing off mirrors which switch position to show a different time on the Reflectius Clock’s display....

Digital artist Robert Gamito takes his inspiration from beauty, geometry and color. All are deadly apparent in his works, combining to convey a strong emotion of attraction with lush color and lovely models. Gamito is a 25-year-old designer and illustrator from Albufeira, Portugal, whose digital manipulation of photographs are certainly worth a much deeper review. Hit the jump for a gallery, but be sure to hit the following link for more of this artist’s work....

Long-time readers of TheCoolist are well aware of our obsession with night photography. Photographer Samantha Tio has experimented with the form and has developed some rather breathtaking results. Her Conveyance photo series is a study of traffic patterns in Asia, commissioned by the Singapore Art Museum. These reflected, show-shutter stills are kaleidoscopic in nature, showing a wild geometric world that appears alien until your eyes begin to settle. When much of the world’s night photography has grown a bit stale, this vibrant brand of traffic-driven light painting is a refreshing step in a bold new direction....

Glacier Skywalk – A 918-Foot High Observation Deck First on our list is the Glacier Skywalk, located on the Icefields Parkway in Alberta, partway between the Banff and Jasper National Parks. The skywalk – which just opened earlier this month – features a number of interpretive displays detailing the environment and ecosystem of the region, terminating in a large, glass balcony overlooking a beautiful natural valley.
